What is and isn’t dishwasher safe

The dishwasher can clean a multitude of items. But there’s still a lot you should avoid loading into it to keep your kitchen gear intact. For example, what should you do about wooden spoons, copper saucepans, shower heads? No need to guess, we’ve got the answers for you.

Household items

  • Zip Log bags: you can clean them in the dishwasher, just make sure to open them up first.
  • Kids toys: if your child’s toys don’t contain batteries, you can happily clean them in your dishwasher. It’s hygienic, too.
  • Fridge shelves: a clean fridge with minimum effort? Did you know you can wash the fridge shelves in your dishwasher? Just make sure they’re warmed up to room temperature before loading them in.
  • Hood filters: say goodbye to annoying scrubbing and cleaning. Cooker hood filters can be washed in your dishwasher. Only check that they don’t collide with the filter.
  • Shower heads: save yourself time and effort cleaning limescale off your shower head – it’s fine to put in the dishwasher.
  • Caps: it might sound odd, but you can wash caps in your dishwasher. There are even special holders for them. Simply place them on the upper rack and use a low temperature programme.

Wooden & copper equipment

It’s tempting to load your wooden kitchenware in the dishwasher. But wood is better washed by hand. Not only can it warp at high temperatures, but it also swells when wet and can crack, creating an ideal place for bacteria to breed. And if you want to maintain your copper equipment shiny for longer, clean it by hand. Copper needs special treatment, as it can turn black due to an oxidation process inside the dishwasher.

Non-sticky pans

Don’t load non-stick pans into the dishwasher. Salt and detergent – together with water pressure – may tarnish the coating and remove the ‘non’ from your non-stick pans. Wash your pans with a gentle dish soap, warm water and a microfiber cloth – this way they’ll last longer.
