Coffee Innovation

The future of coffee

As our collective love for coffee grows, we are continually finding new ways to innovate and explore the limits of our favourite drink. Gone are the days of your Black Americano. Take a look at the latest innovations hitting our coffee shops and homes this year:

Selfie Coffees

Yes, you heard right. Latte art has taken on a whole new meaning in the year of 2022.

If Instagram and the latest iPhone wasn’t enough, you can now get that perfect pic printed onto your latte too. Using the latest technology, the printer uses edible ink to recreate the image within as little as 10 seconds.

Most inks are monochrome brown to reflect the look of cocoa dust. Trials were done in colours, but customers didn’t feel it was ‘healthy’ to drink a colourful image.

Some are calling it the ‘Selfie-ccino’ others are calling it bizarre. There is no doubt there is an art to these coffees, but does it feel as immersive as a true latte art experience? After all, latte art is a talent to be admired. The process, hypnotic to watch, combines finesse and precision as the barista crafts a drink that is truly yours – blessing it with a uniquely human character.

The ‘Coffee’ Cup

Since the storm of ‘Blue Planet II’, inventors have been on a mission to cut down on our single-use plastic, creating unique and sustainable alternatives that remain convenient and trendy. One of the most infamous items is the take away Coffee Cup. We have already seen many forms of reusable plastic cups, stainless steel and even plant-based materials but none have quite cut the mustard like this next option.

What could feel better than drinking from a cup that is almost entirely made from recycled coffee itself? Introducing the coffee cup made out of recycled coffee grounds. Once a coffee is made, you are left with the extracted grounds that is usually just thrown away. However, the Berlin based company ‘KaffeeForm’ have come up with an ingenious product that uses this wasted material to create harm-free coffee cups.

Brewing Coffee from your Smartphone

Today, our smartphones can do almost anything, and now coffee is no longer an exception. We are seeing a new era of coffee machines hit the market using smartphone technology to hone in the perfect brew.

One big reason for our love of smartphones is their convenience. Imagine lying in bed on Sunday morning only to be woken up by the aroma of freshly ground coffee – what a wonderful way to start the day. Or maybe, you’ve got a big group of friends over and you subtly want to take their coffee orders. Pass your phone around the table and everyone’s favourite coffee will be poured - one after the other.
