It is important to understand the complex factors that combine to create the perfect coffee. They all have a major impact on the aroma and taste of the coffee. Discover the various brewing methods, the ideal brewing time, temperature and pressure, how and when the coffee should be ground, the importance of water, and finally, the finishing touch, the all important crema.

Coffee brewing methods.

There are several different methods how coffee can be brewed, and they all have a unique effect on the taste of the coffee. Correct brewing allows the best flavours of the coffee to be released quickly. The most popular methods of brewing coffee include brewing through pressure, steeping, filtration and through boiling.

Temperature, time and pressure.

Although the perfect coffee is all about the aroma, taste and the experience, it is interesting to understand how the various elements combine in the brewing process. Brewing temperature and time, as well as pressure all interact to play a major part in the aroma and rich, satisfying taste of coffee.

Coffee grinding.

One of life’s great pleasures is the aroma of freshly ground coffee beans. Grinding exposes the interior of the roasted coffee beans, releasing the compounds, oils and flavours to be extracted. The type and quality of grinder, grind size and consistency – fine or coarse – are all crucial elements in creating the perfect coffee.

Perfect water for coffee.

The major ingredient in a cup of coffee is water, as much as 99%, so it is imperative the water is of the optimal quality. Cold, fresh water should be the basis of every cup of coffee. Water temperature, hardness, softness, pH levels, as well as calcium, mineral and chlorine content all influence the eventual taste of your coffee.

Crema.

The aromatic, flavourful, reddish-brown froth that crowns the top of an Espresso is crema. Formed when air bubbles mix with fine-ground coffee's soluble oils, sugars and compounds, it is the culmination of the preparation and freshness of roasted coffee beans through its colour, thickness, and consistency.

A perfect crema is the sign of a perfect Espresso.
