Cold Brew – a long history rooted in Japan

People in Japan started enjoying cold coffee as early as the 17th century. Especially the original Japanese “Kyoto-style” Cold Brew was popular. People produced in slow-drip equipment by drizzling cold water over ground coffee. Cold brew as we know it today has gained popularity in the USA and we can now find it in many cafés and households around the world.

What makes Cold Brew so special?

When we brew conventional iced coffee, we brew hot espresso and add it to warm milk foam and crushed ice or vanilla ice. For Cold Brew, we extract cold espresso. We use coarsely ground coffee and steep it in cold water for a longer period of time – usually twelve to 24 hours. This method produces a less acidic and less bitter coffee, which results in a smooth and mild taste. This process elicits aromas from the coffee beans that are often lost during hot brewing.

One Cold brew, many variations

You can enjoy Cold Brew in many different ways, depending on your personal taste and preferences. Here are some popular variations:

Pure and simple

Pure Cold Brew is ideal for coffee lovers who appreciate the natural taste of coffee. Serve it simply on ice, perhaps with a spoonful of sugar to add a slight sweetness.

With milk or plant-based drinks

Cold Brew with milk or plant-based drinks such as oat, almond or soy milk is another popular option. The milk’s creamy consistency perfectly complements the Cold Brew’s smooth taste.

Cold Brew Macchiato

Cold Brew Macchiato is a delicious variation that combines layers of cold brew and frothed milk or cream. The contrast between the strong coffee flavour and the creamy milk makes for a special taste experience.

Flavoured Cold Brews

Looking for that certain something extra? Experiment with different flavours by adding syrups! Vanilla, caramel or hazelnut are popular options. You can also use spices such as cinnamon or nutmeg to give your Cold Brew a special touch and personal note.

A moment of pleasure in a glass

Cold Brew is pleasing for the eye, too. Coffee lovers and baristas often present it in a beautiful glass that perfectly showcases the coffee’s deep, rich colours – and the elegant layering of a Cold Brew Macchiato.
